Please read this quite a funny story on how the dreaded terrorist Abdul Rashid alias Mufti Abu Bashir Ilahi was caught by police in his hole in Azamgarh. That is why they say "Phus Gaya Bechara - Shadi bhi nahi hui aur azaadi bhi chali gayee" (Poor fellow even without getting married, he still lost his freedom).

Lucknow: On the evening of August 14, when a middle-aged man knocked at the door of a dilapidated house in Sarai Meer police circle of Azamgarh district in Uttar Pradesh, the house owner, Abu Bakar was a bit surprised. Introducing himself as Qudus Alvi of Jalaun, the stranger expressed his desire to meet Abdul Bashar, the eldest son of Abu Bakar, for a marriage proposal.

"We are actually looking for a pious man for my daughter. Mizban saheb of Jalaun told us about your son. We are looking for a god-fearing match for our daughter," he said in one go before Bakar could open his mouth. "My family members are waiting outside in a car. Should I call them?" he asked as a perplexed Abu Bakar nodded his head in the affirmative. Moments later, 'Qudus Alvi' was back with four other men.

Barely had the men made themselves comfortable on a cot, when Qudus Alvi started off again: "Sahabzade dikhai nahi par rahe hain. Kahan hain? (Your son is not to be seen, where is he?) ." "Nahi. Hain yahin. Abhi bulwate hain (He is here. I will call him just now)," Bakar replied as he called for Bashar.

Moments later, a lean man of average height appeared from a dingy room. "As salaam alai kum," he greeted the guests. 'Qudus Alvi' got up on his feet to shake hands with Bashar. But everything changed in a fraction of a second. The guests herded Bashar out of the house and virtually dragged him to a waiting Sumo. Even before Bakar could understand what was happening, the men had disappeared with Bashar. A little later, some local residents who witnessed the "kidnapping' ' told Bakar that Bashar has apparently been taken away by the police.

Lest We Forget - Qurban Ali & His Doctrine

For the first decades after independence, India’s covert capabilities were in the main defensive. By contrast, Pakistan’s Intelligence Bureau — led by Qurban Ali, the senior-most Indian officer of its colonial predecessor, chose Pakistani citizenship and transferred every file of importance to his new home — sponsored a series of offensive operations in Jammu and Kashmir. In line with imperial ideologues like General Francis Tucker, Mr. Ali believed that India’s ethnic-religious fault lines made it unsustainable as a nation. This since then has come to be known as “The Qurban Ali Doctrine”. It calls for a 1000 cuts philosophy to bleed India to death, to balkanise the country into much smaller states incapable of securing themselves or their neighbours.

This process started as early as 1948 and in the words of Gul Hasan Khan, the commander-in-chief of the Pakistani armed forces, candidly admitted that an "elder statesman – Qurban Ali" of his country arranged covert supplies of weapons to Islamist gangs battling the accession of Hyderabad to India. Then in 1951, the first major low-grade terrorist initiative by Pakistan was calibrated destruction of telephone lines, bridges and guesthouses in J&K. The goal was to disrupt elections to the Constituent Assembly that was steering the state toward full-scale integration into India.

Much of the Pakistan Intelligence Bureau’s work was — and is — aimed at deepening these fault lines.

Intelligence chokes over clean chit to madarsas

New Delhi-3/8/06: For Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil, madarsas are seats of learning and scholarly pursuit. In a speech at the Ahle-Hadeeth complex in Jamia Nagar on July 24, he merrily gave a clean chit to madarsas saying, "We believe that Islamic madarsas are seats of social service. They are not the centres of terrorism”. But the Minister's words delivered in the aftermath of the serial bomb blasts on Mumbai trains were in sharp contrast to the information of his own security agencies. Intelligence agencies have irrefutable evidence to suggest that a majority of these madarsas are not only breeding grounds of terror but are also in league with anti-India forces to bleed it through a 100 cuts. There are over 350 madarsas within 10 km of the Indo-Nepal border in the Indian side. In central and eastern Uttar Pradesh more madarsas have come up than in the western part. Agencies mention border districts of Siddharth Nagar, Maharajgnaj, Bahraich, Shrawasti, Balrampur and Lakhimpur Kheeri in this connection. In the 10km belt of the bordering districts of Bihar such as West Champaran, East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Saupal, Araria and Kishanganj over 180 madarsas have come up after 1993. What has rung alarm bells in security set ups is the setting up of madarsas on the Nepal border. Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) of Pakistan and terrorist outfits have been funnelling funds and recruiting jihadis from these schools of subversion, intelligence sources said.

Getting back to the Home Minister. In the same speech he had said,madarsas, where knowledge of humanism is being imparted and where human values are taught, could only be termed as "servants of humanity." Intelligence agencies are not too sure about the syllabi, but they say that the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), accused of masterminding the 11/7 serial blasts, has a sizeable following in these madarsas. Many are financed by petro-dollars and share a close association with ISI agents while their premises are used as hideouts for Kashmiri militants, ISI agents, gunrunners and criminals. They also serve as transit camps for terrorists.
